Holy Paladin Guide for Legion

Illidan Legion

Alright, alright, it’s finally done! We’ve finished the Holy Paladin guide for the Legion launch. You can get started by clicking here or by going through the menu at the top of the page.

As a fair warning: it’s long. We wanted to be able to provide lots of information, but if that’s not your speed, you can check out the Wowhead guide that has similar information but with much fewer words.

Also, you should check out the Paladin Discord #Hammer of Wrath where Jeathebelle and I can answer any additional questions you might have.

Great guide, my new bible! You account for Blood elfs 1% extra crit in the stat prio section, but dwarfs have a 2% crit passive, so they need even less crit rating to hit the soft caps, yeah?

The Dwarf/Tauren racial is an increase only to crit bonus, not crit rating. 🙂

Thx to provide the community a well-written guide, because it’s getting hard to find deep-hard-worked things and you do it nicely 😉

I might be wrong here, but my understanding is that haste does not decrease the HPM of a given spell, it just doesn’t improve it. Overall I the guide a lot, good job as always.

there are a few things i disagree with though. One would be the lvl path of your weapon. If you go mid, left, right you only need 24 traits and from my experience this will be easily obtainable until the first mythic id. if you go left, right, mid you need 27 and those 3 more traits make a huge difference. the thing is if you CAN get all 3 it doesn’t make sense to go for the +% heal on AM, because you don’t benefit a lot from it in solo content.

You’re right, haste doesn’t reduce the HPM of a single ability at all, but we do have some sources of healing that aren’t affected by haste, so adding more haste decrease our gross HPM. That’s fairly pedantic and I could probably just change it to be clearer. 🙂

The path that you described is listed under the artifact, and we thought some about whether or not that was the best way to do it, but in the end we decided that sticking with what we have was a better decision for early dungeons and immediately into Mythic raiding. We could absolutely be wrong and we end up with ~24 traits by the time Mythic Emerald Nightmare comes out, but I’m more concerned about having access to Protection of Tyr for Mythic raiding than I am Saved by the Light.

I wouldn’t use that WA. It’s going to eat up your memory really quickly. Look for an addon called Bandaid on curse. 🙂

Great guide, lots of new stuff to learn. Only thing that I don’t remember to have seen in your guide is answer to question is holy pala now counted as range or as mele healer. I heard from some ppl that we are now counted as mele healers but still didn’t found confirmation to that. Can I safely stay in mele on bosses like Mannoroth and be sure that I will not be targeted by Felseeker?

This is a really indepth guide. I particularly liked the graph where I can input my playstyle and then it calculates the secondary stat weights. And yeah do you know if Hpallys will now still be targeted as ranged healers by mechanics?

      Thanks!

We’ll be counted as melee for any mechanic that targets only ranged players.

Thank you for that amazing guide ! Love it 🙂 I do have 1 question that i did not saw the answer to : what relics do you think will be best for holy ?

    • Dreamguard August 24, 2016 / 10:42 pm

You’re welcome! The best relics are typically going to be whichever is highest item level, but any relic that has Shock Treatment, Expel Darkness, Deliver the Light, or Second Sunrise is best.

What UI is that on the first image under Add-ons and Macros? The one that mentions Weak auras.

I wanna setup my frames like that.

That’s just a WeakAura string, it’s not really a UI. You can download it and use it though.

    Welcome to Hyjal! (And Horde!)
Wanted to ask if you recommend leveling, and doing world quests as Prot/Ret instead of Holy.
Was leaning towards leveling as Prot first to tag more targets and aoe dps ability, just wanted to see what you were doing, and if you advise leveling to 110/doing world quests as non-Holy.
    Thanks!

Thanks! Yeah, I’ll be leveling and doing World Quests as Protection. I think Ret can be fine, but they’re both faster than Holy for sure. Holy’s AoE is just too low.

        Thanks for the quick reply!

Also noticed you and Jeathebelle have both spec’d into Aura of Mercy.
(including the UI screenshot below for Zak)
Has there been a change of opinion on that over Devo Aura for raids?

For the past 2 weeks I’ve been trying out Aura of Mercy for M-HFC, and found that it does about 10% of my total healing across all encounters, with 1-2% over heal.

That compared to a situational Devo Aura. Not sure how that trade-off is for Legion-content.

With an artifact trait (Protection of Tyr) that would increase Aura Mastery healing further, has your stance shifted towards AoM for progression? Or do you believe Devo still being the best choice?

        Thanks!

Mercy looks better in HFC because the damage is so low. Mercy will still be fine for some encounters, but I think Devo will be better for most bosses during progression. We definitely still have more testing to do to be sure when and where Devo or Mercy should be used.

Also, Mercy looks like it has such low overhealing because Mercy won’t actually heal anyone who is already topped off. That’s why it isn’t constantly ticking on you while you’re just standing around. Even though it looks like it’s not overhealing, it’s basically overhealing by just not healing anyone part of the time.

Dreamguard – is a screenshot of your Legion UI posted here anywhere? I’m curious how you incorporate the weakaura posted with cooldowns around it.

Thank you for posting that. I may give that look a try. Historically I have my raid frames centered at the bottom of my screen, but I worry that my configuration promotes to much tunnel vision.

I am a little bit curious about the Spreadsheet.
My actual Stats are (all from above) 28609,8838,3166,4957,1522
    Talents: 1,3,1,1,3,2,2
    Artifact: 3,0,3,3,0,0,1,0,3,3,0,0,1,0,1

Stat Weights tell me that haste is on 2nd place. As far as i understand the guides, it should not be, as it “only” provides HPS.

Then i played a little bit with the talents and the advanced section. As soon as i switch on Aura of Mercy haste falls on last place.
Reducing “LotM Casts per Minute” buffs haste.

In the Weights section Aura of Mercy seems to have only tiny HPS differences per stat so why has it such a huge impact on my weights?

    sorry for my bad english.

That’s because haste has no effect on the healing from Aura of Mercy. When you switch to Aura of Mercy you have a much larger portion of your HPS that isn’t improved by haste, so it’s value is much lower.

Your guide transformed me from a mediocre / low level healer – to a great one. I really appreciate all the detail, please keep up the great work!

The level of detail really helped with my rotation and made me truly understand why I am using each spell / ability.

    Thanks again!

Hello! Retired Holy Paladin considering rerolling Paladin again to help my guild. This blog was Gold to me during the past expansion and for that my thanks! I topped most of the fights in mythic HFC when most people told me I couldnt compete with class X on fight Y and a big part of my performance was because of the knowledge I got from here!

I was wondering, since this post is from August, if this guide is still 100% up to date and if I can use it as my “bible” again.

    Thanks!

Would like to repeat the previous question. Is this still up to date?

Also have a question/comment about haste.
you state that haste has no affect on our HPM. However I would argue that it does. Haste reduces the CD on both HS and LoD, two of our most mana efficient heals. And more HS also gives us more IoL, which increases the HPM on FoL by 50%.
So if you have enough haste to give you 10 more HS in a given fight, that would give you 10 more very efficient heals, and 5 more buffed FoL (10 more with the 4pc).
I haven’t done the math on this at all, not even sure how I would calculate it, but I would think that this would be a pretty decent increase in our overall HPM throughout a fight.
Am I wrong about this? or is the increase HPM from being able to cast more more HS (and IoL) and LoD just not enough to be impactful?

Doesn’t seem the owners are updating the blog sadly…but as far as I gather the guide is completely up to date, so we can use it till some major changes happen to our class/spec.
